KPP Test in English (2026): the KPP Gabungan Theory Test in Malaysia
The KPP test (KPP01) is the computer theory test you must pass before you learn to drive in Malaysia. Since 29 August 2025, new candidates take KPP Gabungan: one combined test for cars and motorcycles, with 70 questions in 1 hour 15 minutes. You need 56 correct answers to pass. You can take it in English.
This page explains how the test works and how foreigners get a Malaysian driving licence. Then practise with over 650 KPP questions in English, each with a clear explanation.
How does the KPP Gabungan test work?
The test is taken on a computer at a driving institute or a JPJ (Road Transport Department) office. Every question has three answers (A, B or C), and many show a road sign.
- 70 questions, 1 hour 15 minutes, 56 correct to pass
- Questions about both cars and motorcycles, even if you only want one licence class
- Three parts: A road signs, B safe driving and road rules, C licences, offences and the KEJARA demerit points system
- Languages: Malay or English
Before 29 August 2025 the test had 50 questions and needed 42 correct. Older guides and apps often still show that format.
Can foreigners get a Malaysian driving licence?
Yes. Since 19 May 2025, JPJ no longer converts foreign driving licences for most foreigners, so you get your licence the same way Malaysians do: through the KPP course and tests. Conversion is still possible only for Malaysian citizens, diplomats and MM2H participants.
If you stay in Malaysia for less than 12 months, you may be able to drive with an International Driving Permit. ASEAN nationals may drive with their home licence. Longer stays need a Malaysian licence.
How do I get a driving licence in Malaysia as a foreigner?
- Register at a driving institute. Bring a valid passport. The KPP textbook says you should stay in Malaysia for at least 3 months.
- Attend the KPP class (6 hours of theory, based on the KPP Gabungan book).
- Pass the KPP01 computer test: 70 questions, 56 to pass, in English or Malay.
- Get your learner licence (LDL) and do your practical training with the L plate.
- Pass the practical tests (circuit and road).
- Receive a probationary licence (PDL) for 2 years, then a full licence (CDL).
Rules and fees change, so always confirm the current requirements with JPJ or your driving institute before you start (jpj.gov.my).
How do I practise for the KPP test in English?
Practise here, entirely in English. Instead of memorising the textbook, you work through over 650 KPP questions, and every one has a clear explanation of the rule behind it. The question bank is updated for 2026 and checked against the current road rules. There is a normal study mode, a Mistakes list that collects every question you get wrong, and mock tests in the real KPP Gabungan format: 70 questions from parts A, B and C, 56 to pass, and a 75-minute timer. After each mock test you see your score for every part, so you know where to focus.
Common questions about the KPP test
What does KPP mean?
KPP stands for Kurikulum Pendidikan Pemandu (Driver Education Curriculum). KPP01 is the theory part; KPP02 and KPP03 are the practical parts.
Is the KPP test the same as the "undang" test?
Yes. Many people call the KPP01 computer test the "undang" test.
What is KEJARA?
KEJARA is Malaysia's demerit points system. Some traffic offences add points to your licence. Too many points can get your licence suspended or revoked: a probationary licence (PDL) is revoked at 20 points.
What are the types of Malaysian driving licences?
- Learner Driving Licence (LDL): lets you learn and practise before your practical tests.
- Probationary Driving Licence (PDL): your first licence after passing all tests, valid for 2 years.
- Competent Driving Licence (CDL): the full licence you get after the probation period.
Good luck with your test, and I hope you get your licence easily!
